V.P. Sharma joined PT Mitra Adiperkasa Tbk (MAP) as Founder CEO in 1990. As the driving force behind MAP, Mr. Sharma played a key role in pioneering modern retail in Indonesia, transforming the sectors for middle-up market department stores, fashion, cosmetics & beauty, sports, food & beverage, children’s goods, and lifestyle products. MAP’s diversified portfolio of over 150 iconic global brands includes Starbucks, Zara, Marks & Spencer, SOGO, Reebok, Apple, Boots, Sephora, to name a few.
Under his leadership, MAP grew from one store in 1990 to become the leading lifestyle retailer in Indonesia and South East Asia, with over 3,800 retail stores in over 100 cities as well as growing presence in Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Cambodia.
For his contribution to Indonesian retail, Mr. Sharma was nominated as a finalist for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year (Indonesia) Award in 2007 and CNBC’s Asia Business Lead- ers Awards in 2012 and 2015. His vision and leadership skills have also helped MAP garner many international awards and accolades, including Best Managed Company in Indonesia (AsiaMoney 2005 and FinanceAsia 2007), Top 40 Companies in Indonesia (Fortune Indonesia 2011), Top 20 Most Admired Companies in Indonesia (Forbes Indonesia 2012), #1 Retailer in Indonesia (SWA Magazine 2012), and “Top 50 Companies” (Forbes Indonesia 2020), MAP also won three awards in AsiaMoney’s 2012 Corporate Governance Poll, nominated for “Retailer of the Year” Award (Emerging Market) by World Retail Congress in 2013, and was honored with the “Best Place to Work” from HR Asia Awards in 2023 and 2024.
Mr. Sharma holds a Bachelor of Law and a Bachelor of Commerce, as well as an MBA from UK. In 2023, he received an Honorary Degree D.Litt. (Honoris Causa) from IIS University, Jaipur.
